State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj has withdrawn his controversial remarks comparing Dhaka University to a coaching centre, saying his comments were misunderstood and did not reflect the government's position.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Hajjaj said he was fully withdrawing his remarks and clarified that the comments were his personal opinions, not an official government stance.
He said his intention was to highlight the need for transforming Dhaka University into a more research-oriented and globally competitive institution, not to undermine its history, reputation or contributions.
Hajjaj also pointed to challenges in the higher education sector, including limited emphasis on research, questions over transparency in academic appointments and promotions, and concerns about plagiarism.
Describing the podcast in which he made the remarks as an informal discussion, he said his comments would have been presented more carefully in a formal setting.
The state minister expressed deep respect for Dhaka University's role in the country's history and nation-building, and said he hoped the institution would further strengthen its position as a centre of research, innovation and knowledge.
He concluded by saying that some people had been hurt by his remarks and expressed hope that the issue would not lead to further controversy.
