BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said his party had been unable to observe the death anniversary of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman in a normal manner for the past 17 years due to what he described as fascist rule.
Speaking to reporters after paying tribute at Ziaur Rahman’s grave on the occasion of his 45th death anniversary, Fakhrul said BNP leaders and activists had long faced obstacles in commemorating their founding leader.
He said they were now able to remember Ziaur Rahman more freely and honor his contributions to the country.
Fakhrul described Ziaur Rahman as a leader who laid the foundation for a modern, democratic and well-governed Bangladesh. He added that the government's ongoing reform initiatives were being carried out in line with the late president’s vision for state governance and development.
