The government has reinstated a directive requiring all shopping malls, markets, and retail shops across Bangladesh to close by 7 pm as part of efforts to reduce electricity consumption. Authorities have also ordered illuminated billboards to be switched off and fairs and cultural events to end by the same time.
The directive was issued on Monday by the Power Division's Coordination-2 Branch and sent to all city corporation mayors and administrators, divisional commissioners, and deputy commissioners for implementation.
According to the order, businesses had previously been allowed to remain open until 10 pm during the Eid-ul-Azha season to facilitate commercial activities. With the temporary relaxation now expired, the earlier 7 pm closing requirement has been reinstated from June 1.
The Power Division also instructed authorities to ensure that all billboard lighting is turned off by 7 pm to support energy conservation efforts.
In addition, trade fairs, commercial exhibitions, and cultural programmes nationwide must conclude before 7 pm.
