Acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has officially confirmed that a sequel to the blockbuster film 3 Idiots is in development, dismissing widespread speculation that the new instalment would introduce a "fourth idiot" or be titled Four Idiots.

Speculation surrounding the sequel intensified after Aamir Khan recently hinted that the beloved comedy-drama would return to the big screen. Rumours also circulated that actor Vicky Kaushal might join the cast as a new central character. However, Hirani categorically rejected the claims, describing the title Four Idiots as a media-created misconception.

In an interview with Indian media, the director revealed that the core concept of the sequel has already been finalised and that scriptwriting is currently underway. He said the entire creative team is enthusiastic about the project, while emphasising that the film will retain its original identity as 3 Idiots, with no additional "idiot" joining the iconic trio.

Hirani further disclosed that the sequel will be set approximately 20 years after the events of the original film, revisiting the lives of Rancho, Farhan and Raju. Released in 2009, 3 Idiots starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, Mona Singh and Ali Fazal. The film remains one of Bollywood's most commercially successful and critically acclaimed productions.
