The government has decided to deploy the Bangladesh Army in six strategically important districts, including the capital, following intelligence reports warning of possible sabotage and public disorder surrounding the anniversary of the banned Awami League, Home Affairs Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday.
According to an emergency directive issued by the Political-2 Wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs, army personnel will remain deployed under the "In Aid to Civil Power" provision until June 30. The deployment covers the Dhaka, Chattogram, and Gazipur metropolitan areas, along with Narayanganj, Gopalganj, and Faridpur districts. Authorities have been instructed to ensure the immediate deployment of an adequate number of troops in these locations.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Salahuddin Ahmed said intelligence agencies had detected alleged subversive activities by members of the banned organisation at different levels. He claimed that its activists had been attempting to organise unlawful processions and public demonstrations across the country, particularly ahead of the party's founding anniversary on June 23. Stressing that the government remains on high alert, he said any attempt to undermine public order would be dealt with decisively while reaffirming that lawful political activities would continue to be respected.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has adopted extensive security measures to prevent any untoward incidents in the capital. More than 200 strategic police pickets and checkpoints have been established, security at entry points to the city has been reinforced, and over 18,000 police officers have been deployed. Detective Branch (DB), Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), and Special Branch (SB) units, supported by 15 Quick Response Teams (QRTs), will remain on standby as part of the heightened security operation. The Awami League has remained banned since May 10, 2025, pending the conclusion of proceedings before the International Crimes Tribunal, following the collapse of its government during the July uprising of 2024.
