Meta has announced a major leadership transition at WhatsApp, appointing Indian fintech entrepreneur and CRED founder Kunal Shah as the messaging platform's new chief, succeeding Will Cathcart, who is stepping down after nearly seven years in the role.

Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg announced the leadership change on Monday, praising Cathcart for expanding WhatsApp's global user base to more than three billion people while steadfastly championing user privacy. Zuckerberg said Cathcart would remain at Meta, where he will spearhead the development of new products rather than leave the company altogether.

Welcoming Shah to the role, Zuckerberg described him as an innovative entrepreneur whose experience in building CRED into one of India's leading fintech companies would prove invaluable in steering the world's largest messaging platform through its next phase of growth. The announcement coincided with Meta's reported $900 million investment in CRED, through which the technology giant is expected to acquire a minority stake of around 20% in the company.

Industry analysts believe Shah's appointment signals Meta's strategic ambition to accelerate WhatsApp's expansion beyond messaging into digital payments, business services, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce. WhatsApp Business, digital transactions, and enterprise solutions have already emerged as key revenue drivers, and the new leadership is widely expected to further consolidate the platform's commercial ecosystem while broadening its global footprint.
