Google has officially unveiled Android 17, its latest mobile operating system, introducing a range of new features focused on multitasking, gaming performance, security, and artificial intelligence integration.
Initially rolling out to Google’s Pixel devices, Android 17 will gradually become available on smartphones from other manufacturers, the company said.
One of the most notable features is “Bubbles,” allowing users to turn any active app into a floating window that can be moved, resized, and used simultaneously with other apps -- particularly useful for large-screen and foldable devices.
The update also introduces “Screen Reactions,” enabling users to record their screen while simultaneously capturing facial reactions through the front camera, a feature designed for social media content creation.
For foldable devices, Google has added a new gaming mode that splits the display between gameplay and controls, along with improved performance optimization, reduced frame drops, and external controller support.
On the privacy and security front, Android 17 now allows one-time location access instead of permanent permissions, and users can share selected contacts instead of entire address books. A strengthened “Lost Mode” now requires biometric verification even if a PIN or password is known.
Google also announced enhanced “Live Threat Detection” to better identify scams and suspicious apps in real time. Additional AI-powered features, including Gemini integration, new emoji designs, improved voice dictation, and smart widgets, will roll out gradually -- first appearing on Pixel 11 series and selected Samsung devices.
