Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) plans to install artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic cameras and smart signalling systems at 120 major intersections across the capital after successful pilot tests aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic management.

The expansion plan was presented at a meeting on modernising Dhaka's traffic management, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Monday. Under the initiative, AI-enabled cameras will detect violations of the Road Transport Act, 2018, while automated traffic signals will regulate vehicle movement and can also be manually operated when necessary.

The project will be implemented in coordination with the two Dhaka city corporations, with funding expected to come from existing resources. AI-based traffic monitoring was first introduced on a trial basis on May 7 at several major intersections, including Jahangir Gate, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, and Banglamotor. Officials believe the technology will strengthen traffic law enforcement, improve road discipline, and make traffic flow more efficient across the capital.
