Technical skills essential alongside degrees: Education Minister

Education and Primary Education Adviser Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has stressed the importance of expanding technical and vocational education alongside higher education, saying teachers play the most vital role in transforming Bangladesh’s large population into a productive workforce.

Speaking at the inaugural Dean’s Award ceremony at Jagannath University on Wednesday, the minister said the country’s large population should be viewed as a valuable asset and that educators are central to developing skilled human resources.

He noted that the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has allocated 5 percent of the national budget to education and emphasized the need for effective utilization of those resources.

Highlighting the significance of the Dean’s Award, Milon said such recognition motivates students to pursue academic excellence while encouraging them to contribute positively to society. He also underscored the need to strengthen cultural and religious education and revealed that work has begun on revising the national curriculum and syllabus.

The minister said the government is committed to protecting and improving the education system and expressed optimism about creating a more vibrant educational environment across the country. He also indicated that discussions would be held with the prime minister regarding the construction of additional dormitories and the expansion of university facilities.

At the event, Jagannath University honored 104 students with Dean’s Awards from various faculties, recognizing their outstanding academic achievements.
