Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has announced that the government will recruit 5,000 doctors through a special BCS examination as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services across the country.
Speaking during a surprise visit to the 250-bed Rajbari Sadar Hospital on Wednesday, the minister said the government is working to address longstanding challenges in the health sector by increasing recruitment and expanding training opportunities for medical professionals.
He noted that 14 new doctors had recently been posted to Rajbari Sadar Hospital, although six have yet to join their positions. The minister warned that action would be taken against doctors who fail to report to their assigned workplaces, adding that deputation arrangements across the country are being discontinued to improve accountability.
Emphasizing the government's commitment to healthcare access, he said providing quality medical services at people's doorsteps is a key pledge of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He added that no citizen should be deprived of treatment due to a lack of resources or facilities.
The minister also outlined plans to expand critical care services nationwide, including ICU facilities and 10-bed kidney dialysis units in hospitals across the country. He said procurement processes for dialysis equipment have already been completed, while dialysis costs for low-income patients have been reduced in the latest budget.
During the inspection, the minister visited hospital wards, kitchens, sanitation facilities, and the new hospital building under preparation for inauguration. He reviewed attendance records of doctors and staff and instructed authorities to maintain cleanliness and keep the hospital free from brokers and unauthorized middlemen.
