A homemaker from Pirojpur’s Mathbaria upazila has become financially self-reliant by producing vermicompost fertiliser in her backyard, turning a small initiative into her family’s main source of income over the past 16 years.

Banani Rani, a resident of Chhoto Shinga village, began producing organic fertiliser on a small scale nearly two decades ago. Using cow dung and earthworms, she now produces vermicompost fertiliser that has gained strong demand among local farmers for its environmentally friendly benefits.

She said many people initially looked down on her work, but she continued despite social criticism. Today, the income from the business supports her family and helps cover her children’s education expenses.

Local agricultural officials said Banani’s success has encouraged many women and farmers in the area to become interested in vermicompost production. They added that organic fertiliser is playing an increasingly important role as an alternative to chemical fertilisers in agriculture.
