Agriculture officials in Dinajpur are expecting a bumper jackfruit harvest this season, driven by favorable weather conditions and suitable soil across the district’s 13 upazilas.
The Department of Horticulture has set a production target of 80,650 tonnes of jackfruit for the current season, according to Deputy Director Md Ejamul Haque.
He said Dinajpur’s soil is highly suitable for jackfruit cultivation, leading to steady growth in production each year. This season, ideal weather conditions have resulted in strong yields across all upazilas.
Agricultural field workers have already collected production data from 103 unions and nine municipalities across the district.
Officials said that while recent storms and rainfall caused some damage to mango and litchi crops, jackfruit remained largely unaffected. If the fruits can be safely harvested through the end of the season, production may even exceed the target.
Local residents in Birampur upazila said nearly every household in their area has jackfruit trees, and this year the trees are heavily laden with fruit. They expect the fruits to ripen within days and hope to sell the surplus in local markets after meeting family needs.
Jackfruit orchard owner Saheb Ali from Matihara village in Nawabganj upazila also said his orchard has produced an excellent yield this year and expressed hope for a better harvest than previous seasons if the weather remains favorable.
Ghhoraghat Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Nuruzzaman said the upazila has jackfruit trees spread across 576 hectares of land and homesteads, with strong fruiting visible on nearly every tree. He said around 8,450 tonnes of jackfruit are expected to be produced in the area this year.
