WhatsApp is set to introduce a new “Incognito” mode for AI chats, aiming to strengthen user privacy by preventing even Meta from accessing conversations with its AI chatbot.

Under the new feature, conversations between users and Meta AI will not be monitored or stored, and messages will automatically disappear after chats end. WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart said many users want to discuss sensitive topics such as health, relationships, and finances with AI while keeping the conversations private.

However, cybersecurity experts have raised concerns over accountability. Alan Woodward warned that the absence of chat records could make investigations difficult if harmful or misleading AI advice is later questioned.

Meta introduced “Meta AI” on WhatsApp last year, drawing criticism from users who initially had no option to disable the feature. Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg recently said Meta’s AI services across platforms now have more than one billion users worldwide. Meta claims the new Incognito mode will become the first major AI service not to retain conversation records on servers.
