Iran has entered a fresh political and technological crisis after the judiciary suspended the activities of a special body tasked with restoring internet access following nearly three months of restrictions.

According to the judiciary’s website Mizan Online, the decision came after several complaints were filed, though the identities of the complainants were not disclosed.

The suspended body, formed by President Masoud Pezeshkian on May 12, had recently announced plans to restore internet connectivity across the country.

However, final authority over internet shutdowns and restoration in Iran rests with the Supreme National Security Council, creating further uncertainty over implementation.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks said there were signs of partial connectivity returning in some areas.

Iran first imposed large-scale internet restrictions during anti-government protests in January. A near-total blackout followed on February 28 amid rising tensions involving the United States and Israel.

Authorities later introduced a tiered “Internet Pro” system allowing limited international internet access for selected professionals in exchange for additional fees.
