Renowned Bangladeshi composer, music director and singer Ibrar Tipu is reportedly in critical condition in the United States after a near two-year battle with kidney cancer, with his health continuing to deteriorate despite a recent brain surgery, according to accounts shared by people close to him.
Following a prolonged hospital stay, Tipu has reportedly been brought back to his home in the United States. Lyricist Kabir Bakul, citing Tipu’s wife and fellow musician Bindu Kona, said the family had grown increasingly apprehensive that he was not receiving the standard of care they had hoped for and had consequently decided to bring him home. The decision came after an extended period of medical treatment, during which the artist continued to struggle with his illness. Nevertheless, the exact nature of his current condition has not been independently confirmed, and no official medical statement has been issued.
Bakul and his wife, singer Dinat Jahan Munni, recently spoke to Tipu by video call. In an emotional social media post, Bakul recalled that Tipu had visited their New York home during Eid-ul-Fitr earlier this year despite being unwell, and said that the musician’s characteristic warmth and courtesy remained evident notwithstanding his severe physical frailty. Moreover, he expressed anguish at being unable to do more for his longtime colleague from so great a distance.
