Dengue kills five more, toll reaches 294

Five more people have died of dengue across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, while 1,935 patients have been hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The DGHS Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room released the figures in a press statement on Thursday. Three of the latest fatalities were recorded in Dhaka South City Corporation, while two occurred in areas outside the city corporations in Khulna division. Of the new admissions, 195 were in Barishal, 280 in Chattogram, 382 in Dhaka division outside the city corporations, 175 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 233 in Dhaka South, 292 in Khulna, 93 in Mymensingh, 206 in Rajshahi, 64 in Rangpur and 15 in Sylhet.

As of October 8, a total of 94,151 dengue patients have been hospitalised nationwide this year, of whom 88,208 have recovered and been discharged, including 2,057 in the past 24 hours. With the latest deaths, this year's toll has risen to 294. By comparison, Bangladesh recorded 102,861 cases and 413 deaths in 2025 and 101,214 cases and 575 deaths in 2024, while 2023 saw its deadliest recent outbreak, with 1,705 deaths and 321,179 hospitalisations.
