Bangladesh's dengue outbreak has taken an increasingly alarming turn, with 10 more people dying and 2,107 fresh patients hospitalised over the past 24 hours, the highest single-day death toll from the mosquito-borne disease this year.

Meanwhile, 84,299 patients have recovered and been discharged this year, including 1,964 in the past 24 hours. Of the newly admitted patients, 480 were from Dhaka division outside the city corporations, 294 from Dhaka North, 187 from Dhaka South, 302 from Khulna, 252 from Chattogram, 199 from Rajshahi, 204 from Barishal, 96 from Mymensingh, 75 from Rangpur and 18 from Sylhet.

The latest surge has placed considerable strain on the health sector, particularly as September had already witnessed record levels of infections and deaths. Although the 2023 outbreak remains the deadliest in recent years, with 1,705 fatalities and more than 321,000 hospitalisations, the rapid escalation in deaths this year has rekindled concern among public-health specialists. Consequently, they have urged the authorities to adopt scientifically grounded mosquito-control measures and to step up public-awareness campaigns in order to contain the outbreak.
