Bangladesh's dengue death toll has climbed to 250 this year after one more person succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease in the past 24 hours, while 1,163 new patients were hospitalised, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest figures, covering the period up to October 2, bring cumulative hospitalisations to 82,761, with 5,649 patients currently receiving treatment nationwide. Among the newly admitted patients, 333 were recorded in Chattogram division, 295 in areas outside Dhaka's city corporations, 151 in Barishal, 111 in Khulna, 80 in Dhaka North, 77 in Mymensingh and 71 in Rangpur. Meanwhile, 1,163 patients were discharged over the same period, lifting the total number of recoveries this year to 76,862.
The latest surge follows a sharp escalation in dengue-related fatalities in September, when the disease claimed 148 lives, according to the DGHS data supplied. Nevertheless, the current toll remains well below those of recent years, as Bangladesh recorded 413 deaths among 102,861 hospitalised patients in 2025, and 575 deaths among 101,214 patients in 2024.

By contrast, 2023 saw the country's highest annual toll, with 1,705 deaths among 321,179 hospitalised patients. Consequently, although this year's figures appear less severe in comparison, the steady daily rise in admissions suggests that vigilance remains essential as the season continues.
