Bangladesh has signed an agreement with the UAE-based port operator DP World to run the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chattogram Port for 15 years.
The deal was signed on Thursday afternoon, with Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman and DP World board chairman Essa Kazim putting their signatures to it on behalf of their respective organisations. Under its terms, DP World will operate the terminal and collect fees from users. In return, the company will pay the port authority a one-time fee as well as charges based on the number of containers handled.

The leasing of the NCT gained momentum during the interim government's tenure, culminating in the agreement with DP World under the BNP-led administration. The move has nevertheless drawn opposition, with port workers and protest groups warning of disruption to port operations.
