US President Donald Trump has categorically ruled out fresh military action against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, insisting that negotiations with Tehran are bearing fruit even as the region teeters on the brink of wider confrontation.

In a Truth Social post on Thursday (October 8), Mr Trump asserted that Iran was grappling with a severe economic and military predicament, yet he emphasised that the American blockade would remain firmly in place. Nevertheless, he discounted the prospect of strikes ahead of the vote, a pledge that, according to Al Jazeera on Friday (October 9), followed media reports of preparations for a possible offensive that had unsettled global energy markets. Moreover, The Atlantic had earlier disclosed that the White House instructed the Pentagon to draw up plans for attacks on Iranian targets, whereas The New York Times subsequently revealed that such preparations were continuing despite the president’s apparent reluctance.

The reassurance comes against a backdrop of mounting regional volatility. Tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil shipments, have intensified, and hostilities involving Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia have further exacerbated instability. Consequently, analysts caution that even a carefully calibrated pause in American strikes may prove precarious, since any miscalculation by either side could swiftly unravel diplomatic progress.

Domestically, the political stakes are considerable. Following US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, energy prices soared amid the ensuing conflict, and rising fuel costs have since fuelled voter discontent, potentially complicating Mr Trump’s prospects in the midterms. Accordingly, Brent crude climbed to $105.88 a barrel on Thursday before easing to $104.28; nonetheless, persistent geopolitical uncertainty continues to cast a long shadow over global energy markets.
