Indian actor Mithun Chakraborty, widely recognised for his rebellious on-screen persona in the 2007 film Minister Fatakesto, has been appointed adviser to West Bengal’s information and culture department, with the state government granting him the rank of a full-fledged cabinet minister.

The West Bengal government announced the appointment in an official notification on Wednesday (October 7), stating that it would take immediate effect and remain in force until further orders. Earlier, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had hinted at assigning Mithun a significant role during a government event commemorating the birth centenary of legendary actor Uttam Kumar. However, the precise responsibilities of the newly appointed adviser have yet to be specified. Meanwhile, Mithun has attended several high-level meetings in Tollywood since the new government took office.

In addition to his new role, Mithun will serve as chief adviser to the organising committee of the Kolkata International Film Festival, scheduled to begin on December 16. Beyond his celebrated acting career, he has maintained a longstanding presence in politics. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, having previously entered the Rajya Sabha as a Trinamool Congress nominee before resigning ahead of the completion of his term. Subsequently, he actively participated in BJP programmes and election campaigns over the past five years, and his latest appointment marks a new chapter in his public career.
