Fakhrul quits BNP Secretary General, cabinet post for Presidency

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has resigned as Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and as a minister in the cabinet, after being formally nominated as the party's candidate for the country's 23rd presidential election.

The decision was finalised at a high-level special meeting of the party held at the Secretariat on Thursday afternoon (13 August), chaired by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Alongside stepping down from his roles as Secretary General and member of the National Standing Committee, Fakhrul also relinquished his post as Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Senior Joint Secretary General and the Prime Minister's political adviser, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, confirmed the development to journalists following the meeting, noting that the decision had been reached in consultation with the party chairman.

Fakhrul's candidacy marks a significant turning point in BNP's organisational and political landscape. Having taken over as acting Secretary General in 2011 and formally assuming the post at the 2016 national council, he played a pivotal role in sustaining the party's political programmes and organisational base during Chairperson Khaleda Zia's imprisonment and Tarique Rahman's years in London. Known as a seasoned and measured leader, he has also held significant responsibilities as a cabinet minister. Should he be elected president, his current parliamentary seat, Thakurgaon-1, will fall vacant, triggering a constitutionally mandated by-election. Rizvi added that the question of who will succeed Fakhrul as Secretary General has been left to the party chairman and prime minister to decide, following a review of constitutional and party procedures.

The presidency became vacant after the 22nd president, Mohammed Shahabuddin, resigned on 24 July citing ill health, prompting the Election Commission to schedule the vote for 20 August. Thursday marked the deadline for submitting nominations, with scrutiny set for 16 August and withdrawal of candidacy permitted until 18 August. Since the restoration of parliamentary democracy in 1991, ruling-party candidates have typically been elected unopposed; however, the nomination of LDP President Oli Ahmed as the candidate of the Jamaat-backed 11-party alliance has raised the prospect of a contested presidential vote for the first time in 35 years. With BNP holding a two-thirds majority in parliament, analysts consider Fakhrul's victory effectively assured when voting takes place in the National Parliament chamber from 2 pm to 5 pm on 20 August.
