The government has carried out an urgent reshuffle of key cabinet portfolios after BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was finalised as the party's candidate for the upcoming presidential election, a move that required him to relinquish all party posts and ministerial responsibilities.
Under the new arrangement, Home Minister and BNP National Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has been handed the portfolio of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD), previously held by Fakhrul. In his place, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny, who had been overseeing the Ministry of Water Resources, has been appointed the new Home Minister. According to government policy sources, the decision was taken to maintain administrative and political continuity and to ensure uninterrupted institutional functioning.

The reshuffle was formally approved following a high-level government review meeting held on Thursday afternoon (13 August). As soon as his name was announced as BNP's presidential candidate, Fakhrul had decided to step down from his parliamentary and administrative posts, prompting the government to swiftly reassign responsibility for the vacated Local Government Ministry and ensure administrative continuity without delay.
