Five more children die with measles symptoms, 1,025 infected

Five children died of measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while 1,025 children were newly infected with measles or measles-like symptoms, according to the latest update from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) issued on Thursday afternoon (13 August).

The notice said the five deaths recorded up to 8 am Thursday were attributed to measles-like symptoms rather than confirmed measles infection. This brings the cumulative toll since 15 March to 791 child deaths linked to measles-like symptoms and 99 confirmed measles deaths, totalling 890 child fatalities from measles and related symptoms over the period. In the same 24-hour window, 74 children were confirmed infected with measles while 951 presented with measles-like symptoms; 895 children were newly admitted to hospital, and 863 were discharged.

According to DGHS data, the total number of suspected measles cases since 15 March now stands at 140,076, with 17,543 confirmed cases. Of these, a cumulative 121,908 patients have been hospitalised, of whom 117,690 have since been discharged and returned home.
