A passenger bus collided head-on with a sand-laden truck on the Chandpur-Comilla highway on Tuesday morning, killing at least three people and injuring around 15 others, with officials warning the toll could climb further given the critical condition of some survivors.

The crash occurred near Patwari Bari in Baniyachong, Shahrasti upazila, when a Dhaka-bound Al-Arafa Paribahan bus travelling from Noakhali to Jashore collided with an oncoming truck, crumpling the front sections of both vehicles and trapping several passengers inside. Local residents rushed to the scene to begin rescue efforts before police and other authorities arrived to assist, transporting the injured to Shahrasti Upazila Health Complex.

Health and family planning officer Aklima Akter said three of the injured were in critical condition and had been given initial treatment before being referred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, while others remain under treatment at the local facility. Shahrasti police station's officer-in-charge, Mir Mahbubur Rahman, confirmed three bodies had been recovered from the scene so far, with rescue operations still underway and fears that the death toll may rise given the severity of some injuries.
