Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir has told India's newly appointed High Commissioner that any activity by fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina aimed at fomenting instability inside Bangladesh could undermine the positive momentum in bilateral relations, raising social media reports that Hasina may deliver a public address on August 5.
The remarks came during a courtesy call by Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Tribedi on Kabir at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon on Monday afternoon, during which the two discussed various dimensions of the bilateral relationship and matters of mutual interest, expressing hope for strengthening ties further on the basis of mutual respect, trust and shared interests. The circulating reports that Hasina, a fugitive sentenced to death, might publicly speak on August 5 also featured prominently in their discussion.
Kabir told the High Commissioner that Bangladesh expects India's cooperation in ensuring that Hasina and other members of banned organisations are not permitted to use Indian territory to deliver political statements or engage in activities intended to destabilise Bangladesh, cautioning that such conduct could jeopardise the positive trajectory of bilateral relations. The Indian envoy assured that the matter would be duly considered and that appropriate inquiries would be made.
Both sides underscored the importance of sustaining regular dialogue and constructive engagement, expressing confidence that long-term, sustainable solutions to all outstanding issues could be achieved through mutual trust and continued discussion, according to Foreign Ministry public relations officer Md Kamrul Islam Bhuiyan.
