Former BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia as a fearless democratic leader who devoted her political career to advancing democracy and defending Bangladesh’s sovereignty.

Fakhrul made the remarks at a Milad and Doa Mahfil held outside the BNP central office in Naya Paltan, Dhaka, on Saturday to mark Khaleda Zia’s birthday. The programme was moderated by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, while Maulana Advocate Abu Hossain, member secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal, led the prayers. A large number of BNP leaders, activists and supporters attended the event.

Fakhrul said Khaleda Zia’s life and political career were deeply intertwined with the fate of Bangladesh, adding that she had repeatedly sought to restore democracy through her uncompromising leadership and prolonged political struggle. He credited her with nurturing the party through years of adversity, acknowledging the sacrifices of its leaders and activists and helping BNP attain its present position as a democratic political force.

He further said Khaleda Zia’s ideals and political legacy would continue to inspire BNP leaders and activists. Fakhrul also urged the people of Bangladesh to pray for the late President Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia and seek divine forgiveness for them. The BNP had earlier announced similar Milad and Doa programmes at party offices and mosques across the country as part of its nationwide observance of Khaleda Zia’s birthday.
