The government-held food grain stock has risen to over 2.06 million metric tons, a level officials describe as satisfactory and sufficient to ensure national food security, according to the Department of Food.

As of June 17, 2026, the total stock, including floating reserves, stood at 2,060,507 metric tons, the latest data from the department showed.

Of the total stock, rice accounted for 1,596,579 metric tons, wheat 336,831 metric tons, and paddy 161,084 metric tons. After adjusting for floating reserves, the core stock stood at 2,038,114 metric tons, with additional floating reserves of rice and wheat bringing the final total higher.

Officials said the current level is well above the country’s safety threshold of 1.35 million metric tons, indicating a strong buffer against supply disruptions. They added that ongoing domestic procurement from the boro harvest and continued imports are expected to further increase reserves in the coming months.

For the 2025–26 fiscal year, Bangladesh has already procured 718,373 metric tons of boro food grains domestically. During the same period, total imports—through both public and private channels—reached 8.58 million tons, dominated by rice and wheat.

The Ministry of Food said procurement operations, which began on May 3 and will continue until August 31, are ongoing and are expected to strengthen reserves further. Officials reiterated that stable imports and procurement efforts have helped maintain a steady supply situation in the domestic market.
