Measles death toll rises to 686 as 3 more die in 24 hours

Bangladesh reported three more child deaths associated with measles-like symptoms over the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide death toll since March 15 to 686, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The DGHS said that, as of Tuesday morning, 93 children had died from laboratory-confirmed measles, while a further 593 deaths were recorded among patients exhibiting measles symptoms. Dhaka Division has registered the highest number of suspected measles-related fatalities with 251 deaths, followed by Rajshahi (88), Sylhet (75), Mymensingh (55), Chattogram (50), Barishal (39), Khulna (27), and Rangpur (8), underscoring the widespread nature of the outbreak.

According to the daily surveillance bulletin, 1,009 children sought hospital treatment for measles-like symptoms between 8:00 a.m. Monday and 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. Of them, 973 were admitted for treatment, while laboratory testing confirmed 126 new measles infections during the reporting period. Health authorities continue to monitor the evolving public health situation and provide treatment to affected patients across the country.

Since the outbreak began on March 15, a total of 94,764 suspected measles patients have sought hospital care, while 11,297 cases have been confirmed through laboratory testing. The DGHS also reported that 74,971 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, although public health experts continue to urge vigilance as transmission remains persistent.
