Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has grossed more than Rs 125 crore worldwide on its opening day, a formidable debut that nonetheless fell short of the Indian opening-day record set by the superstar’s previous film, Coolie.
Released in theatres on October 15, the film earned a net Rs 59.70 crore in India across 16,599 screenings, according to the trade tracker Sacnilk, with its domestic gross, including taxes, standing at Rs 70.25 crore. By comparison, Coolie collected Rs 65 crore net in India on its first day, so the record for Rajinikanth’s biggest domestic opening remains with that film. Globally, however, Jailer 2 fared strongly, posting a worldwide gross of Rs 125.25 crore, to which overseas markets contributed Rs 55 crore.
Among the language versions, the Tamil edition led the domestic charts with Rs 43.35 crore from 9,326 screenings, followed by the Telugu version with Rs 12.50 crore from 2,792 screenings. The Hindi release, meanwhile, encountered complications in northern India amid a dispute with PVR INOX over the film’s streaming window. Despite these difficulties, it earned Rs 3.50 crore from 4,371 screenings, while the Kannada version added Rs 35 lakh.

Beyond the numbers, the gangster drama has drawn attention from critics and social media users, with largely positive reactions suggesting that it has succeeded in entertaining audiences. Produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film features Rajinikanth alongside Ramya Krishnan, S. J. Suryah, Mohanlal, Vidya Balan, Sooraj Venjaramoodu and Mithun Chakraborty, among others. Nevertheless, its inability to surpass Coolie’s domestic opening-day record remains a key talking point.
