Actor Imran Khan has reportedly been directed to leave India by 28 October after taking part in a political protest in Mumbai, prompting action by immigration authorities over his status as a US citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
The episode traces back to 10 October, when Mr Khan joined a demonstration at Mumbai’s historic August Kranti Maidan demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Born in the United States to a family of Indian origin, the actor holds an American passport and an OCI card, and Mumbai Police briefly detained him during the protest. Afterwards, he posted a photograph of himself inside a police van on social media with a light-hearted caption about going for a drive, a post that drew considerable attention as the matter escalated into a legal issue.

Subsequently, Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former parliamentarian Kirit Somaiya lodged a formal complaint, contending that foreign nationals holding OCI cards are not entitled to take part in political activities or protests in India. Consequently, the authorities reportedly served Mr Khan with a notice under immigration and foreigner-related laws, directing him to leave the country by 28 October.
