Students who fail two subjects in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations will be allowed to retake them within 15 days of the results being published, Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has announced, in a bid to prevent prolonged academic setbacks.
Speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of an orientation training course for 49th BCS general education cadre officials in Bogura on Tuesday, Dr Milon said the necessary measures would be taken to arrange the examinations promptly. Furthermore, he insisted that the recurring pattern of students failing year after year would no longer be permitted to continue. He added that those who fail the retakes would be encouraged to pursue technical and vocational education, with their results taken into account when deciding whether they should remain in the general education system. The initiative, he explained, is intended to provide alternative educational pathways for students who struggle to pass conventional examinations.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Professor Syed Akhtaruzzaman, president of the Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee and chairman of the Dhaka Education Board, said the authorities were considering supplementary examinations for SSC and equivalent candidates who fail one or more subjects. Moreover, he noted that discussions had centred on preventing students from dropping out of school altogether.
