Former Tangail-5 lawmaker Mir Majedur Rahman dies at 89

Former Tangail-5 lawmaker, upazila chairman and veteran educationist Mir Majedur Rahman has died at the age of 89 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the United States. His eldest daughter, Mir Shamsunnahar Shirin, confirmed his death by phone on Thursday night, stating that he breathed his last at around 10:30pm Bangladesh time after suffering from various age-related complications.

Born in 1937 in Gosai Joair village of Tangail Sadar, Rahman was elected to parliament from Tangail-5 as a Jatiya Party candidate in the 1986 general election. Before becoming an MP and upazila chairman, he served three consecutive terms as chairman of Gharinda Union. Moreover, he played a significant role in developing local infrastructure and educational and religious institutions, and is particularly remembered as an early proponent of establishing a railway connection to Tangail. He held a master's degree in history from the University of Dhaka, alongside a specialised degree in social development and rural infrastructure from a university in the former Soviet Union.

Rahman also held several prominent positions in education and public service, including headteacher of Dharerbari Muslim High School, president of the Tangail District Teachers' Association and founding principal of Anuhla Major General Mahmudul Hasan Degree College. Furthermore, he served as chairman of the Tangail Thana Development Committee, president of Tangail Central Cooperative Bank on three occasions and president of the Bangladesh Jute Growers' Association twice. He also served as the first convener of Tangail BNP, having been nominated by President Ziaur Rahman. He is survived by four daughters, two sons and numerous relatives and admirers.
