Renowned academic professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq Passes Away

Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq, President of the Bangla Academy, eminent educationist, and former Chairman of the Bengali Department at Dhaka University, has passed away. He was 85.

He breathed his last on Sunday (July 5, 2026) afternoon in the capital's Mirpur area.

Professor Mohammad Azam, Director General of the Bangla Academy and a former student of the deceased, told the media that Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq fell ill between 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM while having a meal at a restaurant in the Mirpur-1 area. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He was reportedly taken to the National Heart Foundation Hospital.

Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq was born on September 30, 1940, in Pakundia village under Pakundia Upazila of Kishoreganj. Professionally, he taught at the Department of Bengali at Dhaka University for a long period and also served as its departmental chairman.

He played a crucial role in the movement to ensure the widespread use of the Bengali language at all levels of state and public life. In addition, he edited two notable periodicals, Sunderam and Lokayata.

Among his most prominent published works are: Ekushey February Andolan (The February 21 Movement)
, Rajniti Darshan (Political Philosophy), Sahitya Chinta (Literary Thoughts), Sanskritir Shohoj Kotha (Simple Words on Culture).

He also edited several influential volumes, including Itihasher Aloke Bangladesher Sanskriti (Bangladesh's Culture in the Light of History) and Swadeshchinta (Thoughts on the Homeland). In total, he authored and edited more than 20 books.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Bengali language, literature, and culture, he was honored with the prestigious Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981.

His sudden demise has cast a deep shadow of grief over the country’s literary, educational, and cultural spheres.
