Renowned Artist Mustafa Monwar passes away at 90

Eminent Bangladeshi painter, cultural luminary, and pioneering television producer Mustafa Monwar has died at the age of 90 while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in Dhaka. His passing on Monday marks the end of an extraordinary career that profoundly influenced Bangladesh's visual arts, television, and cultural landscape for more than six decades.
Mustafa Monwar had been hospitalised since June 14 after developing complications from pneumonia. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he breathed his last on Monday morning. His wife, Mary Monwar, previously disclosed that he had been battling a severe bacterial infection affecting his lungs. Following the announcement of his death, artists, cultural activists, colleagues, and admirers across the country expressed an outpouring of grief and paid tribute to his enduring artistic legacy on social media.
Born on September 1, 1935, in Nakol village of Magura District, with ancestral roots in Shailkupa Upazila of Jhenaidah District, Mustafa Monwar was the son of the distinguished poet Golam Mostofa and Jamila Khatun. After completing his secondary education at Narayanganj Government School, he initially enrolled at Scottish Church College in Kolkata before pursuing formal artistic training at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, where he graduated in 1959, securing first-class first in Fine Arts.
Upon returning to Bangladesh, Monwar began his career as a lecturer at the then Government Institute of Arts and Crafts on the recommendation of the celebrated artist Zainul Abedin. He later joined Bangladesh Television (BTV), where he became a pioneering force in children's programming and cultural broadcasting. Throughout his illustrious career, he made indelible contributions to painting, television production, and the promotion of Bangladeshi culture. In recognition of his exceptional achievements, he was awarded the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2004, in addition to receiving numerous national and international accolades for his lifelong dedication to the arts.
