A Dhaka court has granted bail to retired Major General Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury in a case over the alleged attack, vandalism and looting at New Gini Properties in the capital's ECB Chattar area, ending a brief spell in custody that began with his arrest by the Detective Branch.
A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the bail order on Monday, after Mohiuddin was produced before it at the end of a three-day remand. Detective Branch (DB) officers had arrested him from a residence in Segunbagicha on September 30, and the court placed him on remand for questioning the following day. Subsequently, investigating officer DB Inspector Jehad Hossain urged the court to send him to jail, whereas defence lawyer Mohammad Abul Kalam Khan pressed for bail. After hearing both sides, the court granted bail on a Tk 2,000 bond until the next scheduled hearing on October 28.
The case stems from an assault on the New Gini Properties housing project in South Manikdi, near ECB Chattar, on September 26. Several establishments, including content creator Salman Muqtadir's Brownfish Studio, were allegedly vandalised and looted during the incident. New Gini Properties director Saiful Islam Bhuiyan subsequently filed a case with Cantonment Police Station, naming 13 people, including Mohiuddin, and accusing a further 150 to 200 unidentified individuals.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Mohiuddin's grant of bail does not signify a verdict on the allegations, which have yet to be tested at trial.
