MP Gazi Nazrul among 3 sued over second wife’s death

Acase has been filed against Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Mosammat Maksuda Islam and another relative over the alleged abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mosammat Mariam Khatun, 19.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on Sunday night, accusing the three of allegedly subjecting her to physical and mental torture and provoking her to take her own life.
Police recovered Mariam’s body from flat 203 on the third floor of Building no 5 of the National Parliament Members’ Residential Complex, known as NAM Bhaban, in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at around 7:00pm on Sunday. later they sent the body to a morgue for a post-mortem examination.

According to the case statement, Mariam married Gazi Nazrul under Islamic law in June and lived with him and his first wife at the NAM Bhaban flat after the marriage.
Her father alleged that Mariam had told family members over the phone on several occasions that she was being subjected to physical and mental torture over various issues.
Masum Billah also alleged that Mariam’s maternal uncle, Md Obaidur Rahman, had encouraged her marriage to the MP. He alleged that she later took her own life after being unable to endure the alleged torture by Nazrul and his first wife and pressure from the accused.
Mariam's father said that Nazrul called him at around 5:30pm on Sunday and asked him to come to the flat. He then went there with his sister-in-law Sufia and found Mariam hanging from a ceiling fan with an scarf. The door was locked from inside, according to the case statement.

A handwritten letter was found on Mariam’s bed, the statement said. It included lines such as, ‘I bow before you again and again because I have fallen for your affection...’ and ‘I entered the battle trusting you completely, but I could not win and lost on the battlefield.’
