The body of a 13-year-old schoolboy, the son of a Cumilla University associate professor, was recovered from a jungle near the campus on Saturday, with police suspecting that he was killed for his iPhone and a youth named Tuhin now in detention.

Police recovered the body of Eshiat Shahriar Opratim, son of Cumilla University Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum, from a jungle in the Lalmai Sananda hills area near the university on Saturday afternoon. A seventh-grade student at Border Guard Public School, Opratim had left home around 3:30 pm on Friday to take photographs with friends and had not returned. Subsequently, his father, KM Firoz Shahriar, filed a general diary with Sadar South Model Police Station, while his mother appealed for help in finding him through a Facebook post.

Sadar South Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rakibul Islam said police were fairly certain that the killing was linked to the mobile phone. Accordingly, Tuhin was being interrogated in connection with the incident, whereas the body was being prepared for dispatch to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Furthermore, police collected several pieces of evidence from the scene. Nevertheless, the investigation remains ongoing, and the detention of a suspect should not be construed as an established finding of guilt.
