Dhaka renews call for Hasina, Hadi murder suspects` extradition

Bangladesh has reiterated its call for India to expedite the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and to hand over the principal suspects in the killing of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, in a courtesy meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Tripathi that officials are casting as a pivotal step in recalibrating bilateral ties.

Briefing reporters afterwards, Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Swadhin said the two sides had traversed a broad sweep of bilateral concerns, with Dhaka pressing Delhi to hasten Hasina's repatriation and reiterating its plea over the two chief suspects implicated in Hadi's assassination. Rahman underscored the necessity of cultivating a conducive, constructive atmosphere to propel the relationship forward, while stressing that mutual respect, dignity, sovereign equality, and the interests of both nations' populations must underpin future engagement. The encounter, attended by Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and the Prime Minister's foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir, marked Tripathi's first substantive political engagement with the premier since assuming his post.

The extradition question is far from novel: Dhaka formally petitioned India on 8 April for the return of Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal, alongside parallel efforts to repatriate Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain, the two principal suspects apprehended by West Bengal police in connection with Hadi's murder. The issue remains especially fraught given Hasina's recent virtual remarks in Delhi expressing intent to return to Bangladesh by December -- comments Dhaka has publicly contested -- even as broader signs of thaw emerge, including India's resumption of tourist visas for Bangladeshi nationals and an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Rahman to visit India and attend September's BRICS summit in New Delhi.
