India has urged Bangladesh to strengthen cooperation in identifying and repatriating Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally in India, stressing faster verification of their citizenship to speed up the return process.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks during the ministry’s weekly press briefing in New Delhi on Thursday.
He said India has already shared detailed information of the concerned individuals with Bangladesh so that their nationality can be verified and repatriation can be completed in an orderly manner.
Jaiswal said India’s position on the return of illegal foreign nationals is clear, and that all deportations will be carried out in accordance with domestic law, established procedures, and existing bilateral arrangements.
He added that between 2,860 and 2,862 citizenship verification cases are currently pending with Bangladeshi authorities, with some remaining unresolved for more than five years.

He said this delay is making the repatriation process more difficult and urged Bangladesh to complete verification quickly so the process can move forward more effectively.
Responding to questions on alleged pushbacks at the border, he said any such complaints would be taken seriously and necessary action would be taken.
He also said issues related to the 54 shared rivers and water management between the two countries are being addressed through existing bilateral institutional mechanisms and regular discussions.
Analysts say the latest remarks reflect New Delhi’s growing diplomatic pressure to make migration management and border cooperation with Bangladesh more structured and faster.
