Government announces second Padma Bridge construction project

The government is planning to construct a second Padma Bridge, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam said on Monday.
He made the remarks at the Secretariat after a meeting on preparations for safe travel during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
Responding to journalists’ questions, the minister said three route proposals are under consideration, with the Daulatdia–Paturia point identified as a potential option. He added that a feasibility study has already been completed, while discussions are ongoing regarding financing and other preparatory work.

The minister did not provide a timeline for implementation but confirmed that planning work for the second bridge is progressing.
The existing Padma Bridge, a key infrastructure project linking Munshiganj’s Mawa and Shariatpur’s Jajira, has a main span of 6.15 km, with additional viaducts bringing the total length to 9.83 km. The project cost exceeded Tk 30,000 crore and was inaugurated in 2022.
