Road Accidents in May Claim 622 Lives, Injured 1,652

A total of 622 people were killed and 1,652 others injured in 613 road accidents across Bangladesh in the month of May.

This data was revealed in a report by the Accident Monitoring Cell of the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (Passenger Welfare Association). The information was shared in a press release signed by the organization's Secretary General, Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury.

Motorcycle Accidents: Out of the total incidents, 221 were motorcycle accidents, resulting in 231 deaths and 219 injuries. This accounts for 36.05% of the total accidents.

Railway Accidents: There were 42 accidents on railways, leaving 34 dead and 29 injured.

Waterway Accidents: On waterways, 21 accidents claimed 15 lives, left 15 injured, and 7 people remain missing.

According to the divisional statistics, the highest number of accidents occurred in the Dhaka Division (180 incidents), while the lowest was recorded in the Mymensingh Division (27 incidents).

The report also analyzed the nature of these accidents: 42.08% of the incidents were head-on collisions and 

32.30% involved vehicles running over or hitting pedestrians.

Among the victims whose identities were confirmed, the casualties included 139 drivers, 121 pedestrians, 113 transport workers, and 96 students, alongside law enforcement personnel, women, children, physicians, journalists, freedom fighters, and political activists.
