Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) played a leading role in the movement against fascism and in efforts to restore democracy in the country.
Speaking at the parliamentary session on the national budget for FY2026-27 on Thursday, the finance minister said BNP had long been engaged in sustained struggles for the restoration of voting rights, democratic governance, and the fundamental rights of citizens.
He stated that the public expects the establishment of democratic values, good governance, and an accountable state system, adding that political parties must act responsibly to fulfil those expectations.
The minister further emphasised that inclusive politics, economic development, and institutional strengthening are essential for building a democratic and prosperous Bangladesh. He called for political tolerance, national unity, and mutual respect among stakeholders to achieve these goals.
