South Korea opened its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a spirited 2–1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic, overturning a second-half deficit to secure three points in Guadalajara on Thursday.

South Korea dominated possession from the start at Estadio Guadalajara, with captain Son Heung-min driving repeated attacks, though Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar kept them scoreless in the first half.

Despite Korea’s control, the Czech Republic struck first in the 59th minute when captain Ladislav Krejci powered in a header from Vladimir Coufal’s long throw—registering their first shot on target.

South Korea responded strongly and equalised in the 67th minute through Hwang In-beom, who calmly finished after a 25-pass buildup involving Lee Kang-in, showcasing superb team coordination and composure.

The momentum shifted further when Tomas Soucek’s goal was ruled out for offside in the 78th minute, preserving Korea’s hopes.

Two minutes later, substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu completed the comeback in the 80th minute, finishing from close range after another well-worked attacking move.
