US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a highly anticipated three-day state visit, marking the first trip by a sitting US president to China in nearly a decade. Welcomed with a red-carpet reception and a military guard of honour, the visit underscores the growing importance of US-China relations amid global economic and security challenges.

The summit’s centerpiece will be two days of high-level talks on Thursday and Friday, where Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to address major strategic issues, including trade tensions, security concerns, and technological cooperation.

Trade remains a forefront issue, with ongoing disputes over tariffs, export controls, and technology exports driving both sides to seek potential easing of the protracted trade war that has disrupted global markets.

However, the Taiwan question looms as the most sensitive topic. Beijing views Taiwan as a “red line,” vehemently opposing US military support and arms sales to the island. In contrast, Washington continues its security partnerships under the Taiwan Relations Act, fueling diplomatic friction.

Discussions will also focus on technology and investment matters, particularly US companies’ access to the Chinese market, advanced AI chip exports, and the future status of lucrative commercial agreements.

Highlighting the economic stakes, major US business leaders such as Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla’s Elon Musk, and BlackRock’s Larry Fink are accompanying President Trump, signaling the visit’s commercial significance.

The summit comes amid rising Middle East tensions, especially involving Iran, influencing dialogues on regional stability and its effects on global energy supplies.

Experts suggest that the outcomes of the Beijing talks could reshape global geopolitics, redefine international trade dynamics, and influence the strategic balance across the Asia-Pacific region.
