Bangladesh has recorded a new daily high in dengue hospitalisations this year, with 870 patients admitted across the country in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The latest figure surpasses the previous record of 756 admissions recorded on August 11, underscoring the accelerating spread of the mosquito-borne disease during the monsoon season.

The latest admissions have pushed the year's total number of dengue cases to 24,848. One more death was reported in Khulna division over the past 24 hours, raising the national death toll to 71. Of those who have died this year, 43 were women and 28 were men. Dhaka South City Corporation remains the worst-affected area, accounting for the highest number of dengue deaths at 24. As of 8am Monday, a total of 1,753 dengue patients were undergoing treatment at hospitals and healthcare facilities nationwide.

Health experts said dengue infections have accelerated sharply since the beginning of August, with hundreds of patients being hospitalised and multiple deaths reported on several days. They have urged city authorities to intensify mosquito-control, larval eradication and sanitation campaigns, while advising residents to eliminate stagnant water around their homes and seek medical attention promptly if they develop fever or other symptoms consistent with dengue.
