Four children die from measles outbreak in Sylhet and Barishal

Four more children have died with measles symptoms in Sylhet and Barishal, as hospitals continue to face rising patient pressure.

Health officials on Friday said three children died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, and one child died at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

In Sylhet, the three children, aged between six months and one year, died while undergoing treatment between Thursday evening and 11 pm, said hospital Deputy Director Dr. Mahbubur Rahman.

With the latest deaths, the number of child deaths linked to measles symptoms in Sylhet Division has risen to 23.

Officials said one new measles case was confirmed in the last 24 hours, while 53 more patients with symptoms were admitted. Currently, 241 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the division.

In Barishal, a 13-month-old child named Saimun died while receiving treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. He was from Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali.

The latest death raised the total number of deaths with measles symptoms in Barishal Division to 26, including 16 at the same hospital.

Hospital authorities said 33 new patients were admitted in the last 24 hours, while 140 patients are now under treatment.

Officials added that due to bed shortages, two to three patients are often being treated on a single bed.
