Measles death toll climbs to 639 after 8 new fatalities

Bangladesh reported eight more child deaths linked to measles and measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll this year to 639, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The DGHS said in its latest health bulletin issued on Wednesday that 1,039 new patients with severe measles symptoms were admitted to hospitals nationwide over the previous 24 hours, while laboratory tests confirmed 94 additional measles infections.
Since March 15, laboratory tests have confirmed 9,927 measles cases across the country, with 92 deaths directly attributed to the virus. Authorities said another 547 children died after developing clinical symptoms consistent with measles-related complications, bringing the overall death toll to 639.
The health agency also reported a total of 82,029 suspected measles cases nationwide during the outbreak. Meanwhile, 66,999 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

Health officials have instructed healthcare workers to remain on high alert and called for expanded testing, strengthened treatment protocols, and intensified measles vaccination campaigns, particularly in high-risk and remote areas.
