Two young men were shot dead by unidentified assailants in separate attacks barely half an hour apart in Khulna city's Lobonchara area on Wednesday evening, plunging the neighbourhood into fear and prompting accusations of a deteriorating law-and-order situation.

According to police and local sources, the first victim, 21-year-old Manjurul Islam, was gunned down in the Ashibigha locality as assailants opened fire before fleeing the scene; he was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival, while three others sustained stab wounds in the same assault. Roughly half an hour later, a second attack unfolded some 300 yards away, when 19-year-old Najmul Hossain was shot dead near the boundary wall of a house around 8:00 pm.

The back-to-back killings, occurring within such close temporal and geographic proximity, have stirred considerable alarm among residents, with the hospital premises overwhelmed by the grief of bereaved relatives. Family members of the victims attributed the violence to a broader deterioration in law and order, voicing concern that such brazen attacks reflect a worsening security climate in the area.
