The pressure cooker, one of the kitchen's most indispensable and time-saving appliances, can just as easily become a source of serious hazard when handled carelessly, safety experts warn, urging users to observe a set of essential precautions to prevent mishaps.

Many pressure cooker explosions stem not merely from mechanical faults but from user negligence and improper handling. Overfilling remains a chief culprit--the appliance should never be loaded beyond two-thirds of its capacity, with even greater clearance required for lentils, soups or broths, which tend to froth and can obstruct the safety valve or vent pipe; insufficient water, meanwhile, risks overheating and consequent malfunction. Equally critical is the routine inspection of key components: the rubber gasket, safety valve, vent pipe and whistle should be checked regularly, with any hardened, cracked or loosened gasket replaced without delay, and any food particles or debris clogging the vent pipe or whistle promptly cleared. Crucially, the lid must never be forced open before internal pressure has been fully and safely released.

Experts further caution against continuing to use pressure cookers that are excessively old, worn, or damaged, recommending immediate repair or replacement of faulty lid locks, cooker bodies, or safety mechanisms--ideally using manufacturer-approved spare parts. Should any unusual noise, excessive steam emission, or whistle malfunction occur during cooking, the stove should be switched off immediately, with users advised against attempting to open the lid until conditions have fully stabilised. A modicum of vigilance, experts conclude, can avert what might otherwise become a serious accident, underscoring the premium that kitchen safety consistently demands.
